Price Chopper Steak Sale

The one thing I really like about Price Chopper is that they have decent sales on meat. This week for the two day sale they have KC Strip steak for 4.99/lb. This is the best I've seen in the area and I'm always sure to stock up! On the regular weekly sales they have Charcoal/Patio steaks on sale for 2.79/lb., however I found these are yummy too. They're a bit higher in fat and I read they can be tough. We marinaded and grilled them the first time we tried them and they turned out great! The pork steaks are 1.39/lb. I haven't tried these, but it certainly sounds like a good deal! You can still eat good food, just keep an eye on the price!

The other good deals that we'll probably hit are:

Pepsi 4 for $10 (must buy four)
Best Choice Cream Cheese .79
Dole Juice 2 for $5
Best Choice 5lb Flour 1.49

Tasty Tuesday: Bananas!

Whenever bananas go on sale I have a tendency to stock up. All though you don't need to wait for a sale for this recipe if you go to Hen House! They always have ripe and ready to eat bananas for less. If I recall right, it's 39 cents a pound. I personally love banana bread and I have a no-fail recipe I'd love to share to make the perfect loaf.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 1/3 cups mashed overripe bananas (about 6 medium bananas)
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture; stir just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.
  4. Enjoy!

Riverside Red X

Today I discovered the wonderful 99 cent section at red x. Overall it's like a dollar store with less variety but with a different selection. They had various glass frames that looked like 20 dollar frames that would sell in any department store. I picked up a laundry bag for delicates and a magnetic backgammon game. If you drink, I hear it also has the best prices in town for alcohol!

Cosentino's Downtown Market

Today we decided to make dinner for E's parents. We bought pork chops on sale at Apple Market yesterday and I've let them marinade overnight. The marinade was very simple! 3/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup lemon juice, a tablespoon of chili sauce (I use sriracha), and 1/2 cup brown sugar. I put them all in a shallow glass pan and flipped the meat halfway through the night. Since we didn't think about inviting them over until last minute, our thoughts on side dishes changed. We decided to go downtown to the Cosentino's Market to get their awesomely huge twice baked potatoes. They offer three varieties, but the one we always get is bacon and cheddar. Keep in mind these are 6 inches long and overflowing in potato-y goodness for just $1.99 each. One can easily be split for two people and still have some left over.

This is my second time at this market. What I learned today is that there is 15 minute parking right in front or you can go to the garage on the side of the market and park for 30 minutes for free. Be smart and use the elevator to go down to the store instead of walking aroundto the front door in the "blizzard of '09" like I did.
The market doesn't have an ad flyer, but it does have a website. http://www.cosentinos.com where you can check out the weekly specials. It's open from 6am to 10pm everyday. If you're big on seafood, you'll be pleased to know they'll steam your lobster for FREE! Overall there prices aren't the cheapest available, but they are an excellent specialty store. I personally like getting a scoop of gelado to walk around the store with. This is a definite store to check out if you're in the area!

Kansas City Grocery Launch!!

Yay! It's the launch of Kansas City's best place to find out on great grocery deals. We all have fixed expenses that can be lowered occasionally by calling and asking for special offers or reductions. However, most of us agree that groceries are easiest variable in our budgets to adjust. I've been reading personal finance blogs for years, but I haven't had one suite my specific needs. There are great grocery deals in stores everywhere across the country, but I want to focus on Kansas City. I hated rummaging through each blog trying to find the deals I needed. If you live in Kansas City and want to be a part of this project, contact me at kcgrocery at yahoo dot com.
